East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, has installed a Mira Instant Replay server and Mira Control Surface. The new Mira system is part of a major upgrade to the athletics department’s broadcast facilities, designed to entertain and inform fans attending football, basketball, soccer, volleyball and softball games across campus.
The 50,000 seat Dowdy-Ficklen stadium, home of the Pirates football team, houses the broadcast facility. Two giant digital score boards and dozens of displays around the venue broadcast replays and game highlights delivered by Mira. Up to five cameras capture the action on game day while freelance replay operators deliver at least two different angles of each play. The Mira operator simultaneously builds game and individual player highlight packages for replay during game breaks.
“We were replacing an old single camera replay system and did a lot of research prior to making a decision—including asking our peers at other colleges for recommendations,” says Greg Pierce, Assistant Athletics Director-Video & Technology, East Carolina University. “I consistently heard great things about the Abekas Mira and after testing the system for ourselves, Mira was the obvious choice.”
A 30-minute post-game show is produced immediately following each game. Interviews with coaching staff are captured on the sidelines and recorded on the Mira. The show is produced in Mira as a playlist—integrating highlights and specific plays— and then melted to the edit suite for finishing and playout the next day on the Pirates’ website.
“East Carolina University is a great example of how the college broadcast community seeks advice and guidance from their peer group,” says Junaid Sheikh, CEO, Abekas. ”We’re pleased that Mira receives such a glowing testament from its users.”
