Mira makes Live 3D Debut

The Abekas Mira 8 Channel server made its debut in live 3D television production over the weekend of July 3rd, 2010 when the NASCAR Media Group and Turner Sports employed Mira to produce two live 3D feeds from the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway

The two live feeds were available online through TNT RaceBuddy on NASCAR.com, and on air, through DIRECTV, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks. One of these 3D feeds focused on the track and the other feed on pit row. Turner produced the feeds for the 3D coverage utilizing six 3D camera rigs, with the cameras positioned in the front and back stretch of the track and in pit row.

Bexel rebuilt its BDS1 mobile unit to make it 3D-capable, outfitting it with the Mira 8 Channel server, and Turner based all of its 3D operations from that mobile unit for the NASCAR 3D event.

Selected live line-cuts of the live 3D camera feeds were recorded to the Abekas Mira 8-channel production server, which was configured to operate for this event as a four-channel 3D instant replay machine. The DNF Controls “DMAT-AB” control panel controlled the Mira 3D replay output channel, and was used by a replay operator to perform live instant replays of the captured 3D content.

“The Abekas Mira operated in a ‘3-In/1-Out’ replay configuration for the 3D feeds,” said Douglas Johnson, Chief Product Manager at Abekas. “This event confirmed the viability of using the Abekas Mira in fast-paced live 3D television productions—offering live instant replay in 3D for a mere fraction of the cost of the most widely-deployed instant replay system currently found in the 2D marketplace.”
